Esther P. Sommers, 96, Kokomo, went to be with Jesus at 12:25 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Howard Regional Health System. She was born Sept. 29, 1910, to Emanuel and Mazie (Kendall) Troyer. On July 2, 1932, she married Elmer Sommers, who died on Feb. 5, 1995.
She was retired from farming and janitorial work, always working beside her husband. She was a member of Alto United Methodist Church and enjoyed working on puzzles, crocheting, cooking and baking cookies.
She is survived by one daughter, Jane Hicks; and son-in-law, Paul; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Sommers; three sisters, Helen Slabaugh, Pauline Myers and Eva Osborne; one sister-in-law, Elsie Troyer; brother-in-law, Clayton Sommers; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; one son, Charles Sommers; two sisters, Florence Weaver and Leatha Troyer; and one brother, Paul Troyer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., with burial following at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Harold Williams and Clayton Sommers will officiate. Messages maybe e-mailed to [email protected].
