GULFPORT -- Leon Button, 81, of Gulfport, died Monday, June 29, 1998, in Gulfport.

Mr. Button was a native of Kentucky and served in the Army during World War II. He was retired as Assistant Inspector for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol from 1950-1974 and previously worked for Gulfport Police Department from 1946-1950. After his retirement from the Highway Patrol he served as baliff for Judge Michael Ward at the Harrison County Youth Court for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gulfport.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Gardner and Sara Jane Register Button; and a brother, Raymond Button.

Survivors include his wife, Myra Hickman Button of Gulfport; a son, Gary L. Button Sr., of Gulfport; two brothers, Guy Button of Harriman, Tenn., and Lewis Button of Glasgow, Ky.; a sister, Pearl Button Reasor of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Mr. Gary Button Jr. of Ocean Springs and Susan Button Hall of Raleigh, N.C.; and 3 great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Joyce Button of Rexburg Idaho, Haileigh Lyn Button, and Gavin Leon Button.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, July 2, 1998, at 2 p.m, at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home Chapel on U.S. 49 North in Gulfport where friends may call two hours before service time. Burial will be in Evergreen Gardens in Gulfport.
