Russell was the son of John and Cecelia (Duncan) Canary of Ohio. He married Angeline Buchanan in 1891, and following her death in 1907, married Dora Freeman on 19 November 1907 in Crawford County, Ohio. He had three children from his first marriage. His daughter Gladys died at age 23 in Crawford County.
