LITTLE GIRL,TRAPPED, DIES IN BARN FIRE.
Burned to death when one of her little playmates stuck a match, inadvertently setting fire to dry hay, the badly charred body of four-year-old Diana Baraga, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Louis Baraga, of Channing, was removed from the barn -on the Feak farm, in Channing, shortly before 6pm last night. The barn was destroyed by the fire, fought by the Channing Fire Department and volunteers.
According to the report of Sheriff Amedeo Pesavento, who was summoned to Channing by Edwin Miller, deputy sheriff on the west side of the county, the fire apparently started about 5pm.
Playing in the barn were Diana and her twin brother, Richard; Dennis Morgan, age 5; and Pete Feak, age 3. "The children were badly frightened, but we determined that one of them struck a match near the hay, which suddenly burst into flame." Sheriff Pesavento, who made the trip to Channing, accompanied by Coroner Frank Tondin, of Iron Mountain, said.
"Three of the children - Richard, Dennis and Peter, ran from the flaming hay. Diana was apparently trapped by the blaze which in a few seconds flamed into a wall of fire," the sheriff said. Mrs. Baraga, summoned to the barn by the hysterical children, called to her daughter but received no response. She attempted to fight her way through the flames but was driven back by the intense heat.
The body had been recovered only a few minutes before the sheriff and coroner reached the scene shortly after 6pm.
The body of Diana was taken by ambulance to the Buchanan-Villemur-Tondin Funeral Home.

NO INQUEST, says Coroner:
Coroner Tondin declared the death accidential and said no inquest would be held.
The child, born November 16, 1944, in Milwaukee, leaves, in addition to her parents and twin brother, Richard, her paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs. Carl Baraga, and her maternal Grandmother, Mrs. Esther Hull.
The funeral will be held at 1pm tomorrow at the funeral home with the Rev. N.U. McConaughy, pastor of the First Presbyterian, officating.
Burial will be in the Channing Cemetery.
