Russell Wayne Barrett, age 74.5, of Florence, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday night, March, 10, 2014, at McLeod Hospice House following a three week illness and hospitalization.
Russ Barrett was born on August 06, 1939, in Parkersburg, WV, the youngest child of Delbert Hall Barrett and Bess Mae (Hiley) Barrett. He was raised in Parkersburg and attended Parkersburg High School where he played the coronet in the matching band to become a 1957 graduate. After high school, he attended Marietta College in Marietta, OH, to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in June 1964.
Russ went to work at E. I. DuPont deNemours Company at Washington, WV, in May 1959 as a computer programmer/operator and later as a systems analyst, data processing manager, cost accounting supervisor, and business specialist.
He married Miss Linda Lee (Law) in Parkersburg, WV, in the First Baptist Church on October 30, 1960, and enjoyed 53 years of marriage together. Russ was Baptized in this same church on March 26th, 1961.
In addition to his well beloved wife, he is survived by 3 beloved children: Dr. Michael Wayne Barrett and wife (Valorie Florence Wainscott Kern) of Florence, SC; Joyce Ann (Barrett) Waggoner and husband (William Alan Waggoner) of N. Charleston, SC; and Susan Lynn (Barrett) Harman and husband (Robert Daniel Harman) of Key Largo, FL. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren: Scott Michael Barrett, Mikayla Rebecca Barrett, Joshua Aaron Barrett, Melissa Amber Waggoner, & Grant Alan Waggoner; & 1 step-grandson: Dillon Porter Kern.
He is survived by an older brother, Edwin Paul Barrett, and wife (Betty Jean McMillan) of Vienna, WV and their 4 children-David Wayne Barrett, Laura Jean (Barrett) Merritt, Jennifer (Barrett) Ridenhour, & Janet Barrett; and an older sister, Doris Jane (Barrett) Bull (widow of Herbert Granville Bull Jr) of Spring, TX, and her 2 children- Carol Johnson & Beth Mollison.
He lived in Parkersburg, WV, through 1979 and was active in local activities and government. He was a member of the South Parkersburg Jaycees (President 1970-71 & Outstanding Young Man 1971-72) and also served on the Parkersburg City Council for 8 years through about 1978, the last 4 years as president of the Parkersburg City Council for District 3. He and his family also attended and were active members of the Seventh Street UM Church in Parkersburg.
In August 1979, he was transferred with E. I. DuPont to Florence, SC where he moved with his wife and 3 children and attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence.
He worked with DuPont for 38 years before retiring in 1998. After his work with Dupont, he was employed as Director, and later Commissioner, of the Florence County Voter Registration and Election Commission from 1999-2012. Russ was also a Notary Public in SC from 2003-2013.
Russ enjoyed spending time with his family, outdoor & yard activities, working on his 1967/68 Mustang, and in the past photography, bowling, and camping. He was also active in the Republican party.
He is greatly missed by his family, friends, and many others who have had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.
