Religious Figure. A member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, John Charles McQuaid prior to his appointment to the archbishopric of Dublin, was deeply attached to the administration of Blackrock College, of which he served among others as Dean of Studies and President. Named archbishop of Dublin in 1940, his long tenure, which lasted thirty years, saw in Dublin the foundation of some 60 new parishes, the building of 80 new churches, 250 primary schools and 100 secondary ones, and the establishment of the Catholic Social Service Conference and the Catholic Social Welfare Bureau. Passing away quietly an hour after being admitted at Loughlinstown Hospital, his figure left a significant mark on the Irish Church and social life of his era yet he remains to this day a subject of questions and criticisms, mainly due to his political involvements.
