Son of James Benjamin and Mary Alice (Shuff) Shallard. Saw active service in the First World War and was twice recommended for the Military Cross. After the war, he was a local conservative politican in Islington. He and his wife, Mabel Cheesewright, lived first at Montpelier House, Brecknock Road; and then at High Tree, Cannons' Drive, Edgware, London. Shallard's only sister, Hilda May, sang with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in London for a time and, widowed in the Second World War, emigrated to the United States.
