Walter E. 'Wally' Knopka,89, passed away at his home on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Born in Utica, NY, he was the son of the late Frank and Bertha Knopka. Wally resided in Colonie for most of his life. He served his country during WWII in the US Navy. Wally ran his own construction business before working for the Ann Lee Home in Colonie from where he retired. He was a life member of the Albany County Fish & Game Club and a member of the Fuller Road Fire Dept. Wally enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling and feeding the chipmunks. One of his greatest accomplishments was his koi pond that he took great pride in. Wally was the beloved husband of the late Helen Dutchy Knopka for 50 years until her passing in 2000. He was the devoted father of Bruce (Cherie) Knopka of New Hampshire, Galemarie (Richard) Ribet of Colonie, and Kim (John) Papp of Sharon Springs. He was the loving brother of Frank Knopka, Barb The Warden (Bob) Raacke and the late Bernie Knopka and Joan Money. Wally was the cherished grandfather of Jenny, Richie Doc, Julie The Animal, Kevin, Jeremy, Jordan, Nicole and Paul Michael. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren and special caretakers and stealers of the M&M's, Joshua, Benny and Izabella Gabby as well as five additional great-grandchildren. Wally will also be missed by his close friends, Mike Carey and Chester Vigars. Wally's family would like to thank Dr. Tai and the staff at NYOH of Rexford for their care and support and Donna, Sue, Michele, Heidi and Hope at the Ellis Health Infusion Center for their care and support and always having his room ready for him.
