Born in Bishopville, July 1, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Lee Graddick and the late Bertha Woodham Graddick.
Mrs. Kirkland graduated from Hartsville High School and received a degree in business administration from Coker College in Hartsville. She operated the family business, Kirkland Cleaners, for 12 years after the death of her husband.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, the Jennie Alderman Bible Study Group, the Friendship Sunday School Class and the XYZ group. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Sumter, The Book Club, the Sumter Art Association and served on many state and local boards. She was presented the John R. McKnight Award of Shaw Air Force Base for her work on the U.S.O. Board.
