Mary Phillips Services Held

Mrs. Mary E. Phillips, 87, a former resident of Staples, died at St. Vincent’s Home, Bismarck, N.D., early Monday morning, May 10.
Funeral services were conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Sacred heart, with the Reverend Vincent Huebsch officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen hill cemetery, Staples.
Mary E. McDonald was born the daughter of Sir John and Mary Jane Degnan McDonald. August 8, 1883 in Montreal, Canada. As a young girl, she moved with her parents to Staples. She was united in marriage to James Phillips April 17, 1904, at the Church of the Sacred heart in this city. Following their marriage, they resided in Staples for a number of years and then moved to Fargo and Grand Forks, N.D., where Mr. Phillips was employed by the Northern Pacific Railway Company.
Following the death of her husband in 1951, Mrs. Phillips continued to reside in Grand Forks until moving to Staples in 1960, where she made her home with her sister. For the past five years, she has resided in Bismarck, N.D.
She was a member of the Church of the Sacred heart, the Catholic Daughters, the Lady Foresters and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors are three sons, James of El Paso, Texas, Robert of Montgomery, Ala., and Patrick of Mandan, N.D.; four daughters, Mrs. Louis Keyes (Margaret) of International Falls, Mrs. Joseph Hennesey (Jeannette) of Framington, Mass., Mrs. Peter Stern (Katherine) of Bismarck, N.D., and Mrs. Walter Russell (Mary Jane) of Mandan, N.D.; a sister, Mrs. T.J. Maroney of Staples; a brother, Stanton McDonald of Cleveland, Ohio; 37 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Leo and John, and by 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Serving as pallbearers at the rites were L.W. Harter, Robert Batcher, K.R. Johnson, Lloyd Giddings, Frank Sullivan and Leo Fahnlander.
