Ex-Lansing Mayor Dies
Laird J. Troyer Is Victim Of Heart Attack; Rites Friday

--Laird J. Troyer, 67, former mayor of Lansing and for the past 18 years friend of the court and chief probation officer, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Wednesday afternoon at 3:10 o'clock, while working in his office at the city hall.
--Mr. Troyer had been suffering from a heart ailment for a long period. He suffered a mild attack Wednesday morning at his home but quickly recovered. Death came as he was sitting in his office. Coroner Harry E. Leadley said Mr. Troyer had suffered a heart attack. His death brought to a close 27 consecutive years of service to the people of Lansing and community in city and county government affairs.
--Mr. Troyer came to Lansing in 1922 and was appointed to the local board of health where he served for two years. In January 1924, he took over his new duties as alderman, serving until January 1927.

Elected Mayor in 1926
--In the fall of 1926, he was elected to the office of mayor of Lansing, defeating Alfred Doughty in a close contest. Mr. Troyer took office the following January and served four years in the executive office.
--During his tenure as mayor, he was the prime mover in bringing about construction of the Logan street bridge and numerous other major municipal and civic projects.
--Mr. Troyer was appointed friend of the circuit court in charge of alimony and probation cases from the court. Later he was named chief probation officer in addition to his duties as friend of the court. In the early years that followed, he watched the activities of his office grow from a small beginning to one of major proportions. In the early years some $20,000 in alimony was collected and disbursed by Mr. Troyer. In 1948, his office reported a total collection and disbursement of $739,220.
--In addition to his governmental activities here, he had previously served as county clerk and register of deeds for Oscoda county. He was closely identified with civic affairs throughout his career here. He was a member of Draft Board No. 3 during the late war, and was a member of
the Ingham county draft board at the time of his death. He was active in state organizations and was secretary-treasurer of the Michigan Friend of the Court association.
