Heinz was born in Annaberg, Germany. He came to America in the summer of 1926 with his mother and two siblings. His father and two older sisters came to America and settled in Utah before the rest of the family.
His parents owned a thriving coal company in Germany. When he was young he would help his father deliver the coal. One day he complained "Will we always have to do this for the rest of our lives?" Little did he know that one day he would become an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad hauling trainloads of coal.
