Champ was the second child born to Champ and Florence "Louise" Fielder Barnes. He attended Arlington State College and University of Texas in Austin. Champ served in the United States Navy and was retired after 30-years with Sperry Sun Well Surveying Company. Champ and Dorothy were married in Dallas, Texas on 13 June 1953. He was survived by his wife, four children, and two siblings.
