Alexander Glas Strachan, the son of Joseph Strachan and Elizabeth Glas, was born near Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended the University of Edinburgh and studied medicine. Strachan immigrated to King William County, Virginia, about 1766, then to Petersburg, Virginia, by 1772.

He practiced medicine and opened an apothecary shop. Strachan became a successful and wealthy physician/merchant. He served during the American Revolution as a physician and corresponded with Gen. George Washington about the general health of the troops of Virginia.

Strachan was one of the first aldermen of the city of Petersburg in 1784. His house at 302 Cross Street in Petersburg, is noteworthy because of its method of construction, which includes mortice and tenon joints with pegs. It remained in his family for many years and was sold to be the rectory of Grace Episcopal Church in Petersburg in 1936. The Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc. obtained it in 1968 and it is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

He married first Lucy Pride (1759-1780), the daughter of Halcott Pride and Mary Briggs of Surry County, Virginia, on 6 November 1777, and married second Sarah Feild (1764-c.1815), the daughter of Theophilus Feild and Nanny Taylor on 12 June 1783. Dr. Strachan had a total of 10 children.
