Dr. Denny graduated from Hampden-Sydney and then earned his doctorate in 1896 from the University of Virginia. After that he returned to Hampden-Sydney to become their head football coach for one season. He taught Latin and German. In 1899 he was appointed a faculty member at Washington Lee where he was Professor of Latin. He rose to the presidency at that university in 1901 and remained until 1912 when he accepted the presidency of the University of Alabama. He served Alabama until 1942. Denny Chimes and Bryant-Denny Stadium are named in his honor. What he did for the University of Alabama was incredible. The details are in the fine work of Delbert Reed, "Mike Denny, The Shadow of a Single Man."
