Royal was born about 1818, the son of Leonard and Elizabeth (Stearns) Nutting. He married Betsey Gallea about 1840 and they had ten children: Electa; Eugene; Gertrude; Edith; Matilda; Alice Jenette; Elbridge; Clarissa; Harriet; Kittie.
In 1850 the family was living in Henderson, New York and Royal was working as a sailor. In 1860 the family was living in Ellisburg, New York and Royal was employed as a carpenter. By 1865 Royal and Beysey had separated, and they divorced in 1868.
On August 27, 1862 Royal enlisted as a Private in Company L, New York 10th Heavy Artillery Regiment. He was mustered out in Washington D.C. on June 15, 1864.
Royal married second wife Catherine M. Custer sometime between 1868 and 1870. In 1870 and 1880 they were living in Richland, New York, where Royal was a farmer. Catherine died sometime between 1880 and 1885.
Royal married Mary Angeline Wood on November 11, 1885 in Richland, New York.

Pulaski, March 27 - The funeral of Royal L. Nutting, who passed away Friday evening was held at the family residence in Fernwood at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The deceased who was a veteran of the Civil War, was about 87 years old and was at one time a member of the J. B. Butler Post No. 111, G. A. R., Pulaski.
