The memorial stone in this cemetery is a cenotaph. This stone which is beside the graves of his wife and his eldest son was placed there through the efforts of the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans to commemorate the sacrifices that he and his family made during the War Between the States.

He died as a prisoner of war at the camp in Elmira, NY and he is buried in the National Cemetery there.
