Copan was a member of the 1977 Mountlake Terrace High School team that won the Class AAA championship. Copan played at Edmonds Community College and Seattle University. He later played AAU basketball with Brewster Packing. Copan had been an assistant coach at Edmonds CC for several seasons. Former University of Washington star Dan Caldwell, one of Copan's high-school teammates, cut short his professional season in Spain to return for the funeral.
