Kathleen Shanahan Corbett of DeWitt, died at Francis House Residence on March 29, 2014. "Kay" was born in Homer, NY, daughter of the late William and Florence Shanahan. She graduated from Homer High School and was a proud graduate of the Crouse Irving School of Nursing ('49). Kay was active in the Crouse Irving College of Nursing Alumni Association and until recently served on the Board of Directors. After her retirement from Crouse Hospital she enjoyed substituting as a school nurse in East Syracuse and Jamesville DeWitt. She was an active participant in a group that began as a Home Bureau (The Hill Unit) and has been together for over 50 years. The members of that group still meet regularly and are Kay's lifelong friends. Kay was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in DeWitt and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Kathleen was predeceased by, her sister, Mary Kelly and her brother, William Shanahan. Her husband of 58 years, John R. Corbett passed away in 2008. Kay is survived by her two sisters, Betty Finney of Cortland, Helen (Donald) Broton of Liverpool; her sister-in-law, Barbara Shanahan of Homer, and her brother-in-law, James (Patricia) Corbett of Auburn, NY. Kay will be greatly missed by her family including her three daughters, Colleen O'Malley of Liverpool, Karen (Fred) Field of Syracuse, Sharon (Grazi) Zazzara of Fayetteville, and her four sons, David (Susan) Corbett of East Syracuse, John (Carolyn) Corbett Jr. of Palm Coast Florida, Daniel (Kay) Corbett of Farmington, and Christopher (Brooke) Corbett of Englewood, Colorado. She will be remembered fondly by her 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Kay is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family would like to thank friends and relatives who have shown so many acts of kindness and support during Kay's recent illness. A special thank you is extended to the exceptional caregivers and nurses from Hospice of CNY and Francis House. Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 E. Genesee St., Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Church. Burial to follow in St Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.
