'Volunteer of Year' Says Aiding Others 'Wonderful'

A 73-year-old woman who makes volunteer work practically a full-time job has been named the Retired Senior Volunteer Program's first Volunteer of the Year.
Mrs. Grace Phipps, a resident of Burt Tower, spends about 40 hours a week teaching arts and crafts and doing other duties at the Salvation Army and Lucas Hall.
Mrs. Phipps said she started doing volunteer work of various types in 1946 despite the fact that she also worked at various jobs and cared for her late husband Harry, an invalid.
"It's the most wonderful thing in the world to help someone else," she said. Mrs. Phipps said she signed up for the RSVP program when it started several years ago and heartily recommends it to all older persons. "it helps you keep active," she said.
