Mrs. Alma Hogue........a passion for working with children and youth.

Almiria (Alma) Elizabeth Cabaniss Hogue was birn March 14, 1921 in Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina to the late Walter and Dovie Neil Cabaniss. A family that made distinct contributions to the histoy and progress of the people in Cleveland County Community.

She slipped quietly away to her eternal resting place on Saturday April 26, 2014. She graduated with honors from Cleveland High School in 1938 and received B. S. Degree from Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1942. In addition, she received graduate credits from Hampton University and Fayetteville State University.

She began her teaching career at Borders in Cleveland County and later transferred to Zoar Elementary. She then joined the staff of Cleveland High School as primary teacher and coached the elementary boys basketball. In 1958, she located to joined the Mecklenburg County School System as a primary teacher at Torrence Lytle High School. At the same time she coached the high school girls basketball teams for several years. In 1963, she became the first black classroom teacher at Huntersville Elementary School, and retired in 1985.

Her motto for teaching was "We teach students, not books." She's known for "her" saying, "Teachers are born, not made." She was also the first black Recreation Director of Holly Oak Park in Shelby, North Carolina.

At an early age she joined Durham Chapel Methodist Church in Shelby where she was very active as a Church School Teacher, Youth Director, and Youth Director. She later joined Simpson-Gillespie United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dedicated to the church, she served as Youth Director, Church School Superintendent, Chairperson of Worship, Church School Teacher, Lay Leader and At-Large Member of the Church Council.

She received the Drum Major Award from President Barack Obama in 2013, by the Black Methodist Church Renewal.

She married the late Mr. Edward Hogue Sr. on May 11, 1946. To their union their children included the late Bertram Hogue, Kyen Jenkins and Edward Hogue II. She is the grandmother of Kenyanta Hogue Gallmon (Randy), Tiffany Hogue, Marico Hogue, Sheena Hogue and Ebony Hogue. Her great grandchildren are Khalim Davis, Kyla Sherrill, Chloe Person, and Elijah Gallmon.

Preceding her in death were her parents Walter and Dovie Neil Cananiss, her husband Edward Hogue I, son Bertram Hogue, brothers Edward, Paul, Ray, and Warren, sisters Verna Sue and Vergie.

She leaves to cherish fond memories her Son Edward Hogue II, Daughter-in-law Cynthia Pharr Hogue, Grand-Daughter Kenyanta Hogue Gallmon (Randy), Grand -Daughter Tiffany Hogue, Grand Son Marico Alphashawn Hogue, Grand Daughter Sheena Hogue, Grand Daughter Ebony Hogue, Great Grand-Son Khalim Ric'hard Davis, Great Grand-Daughter Kyla Sherrill, Great Grand-Daughter Chloe Person, Great Grand-Son Elijah Gallmon, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

In her lifetime she shared Love, Kindness, Wisdom and Generosity. Her light will be missed, but her love will still shine bright for generations to come.

Her oldest son Bertrum Hogue died in a car accident in Florida, he was cremated his wife has his ashes.
