GOSHEN — Ruth Evangeline Martin, 87, died at 9:12 a.m. June 17 at IU Health Goshen Hospital.
She was born Oct. 15, 1926 in Streetsboro, Ohio, to Menno J. and Kate (Miller) Nussbaum.
She married her husband on Jan. 4, 1955 in La Plata, Puerto Rico. He survives.
She attended Apple Creek (Ohio) High School for three years and graduated as valedictorian from Hesston Academy in 1944. She attended Hesston College in Kansas and received an associate's degree in 1948.
In 1949-50, she did voluntary service at La Plata Mennonite Project in Puerto Rico. In 1953, she graduated from Eastern Mennonite College with a degree in elementary education.
She taught school in Kansas, Idaho and Puerto Rico. She taught kindergarten through the second grade at Academia Menonita Summit Hills in San Juan, during the school's initial years of operation, where she was a founding director.
She always enjoyed music and participated in choirs at colleges and churches she attended. She read widely, enjoying literature, poetry, history, inspirational writings and newspapers to keep informed of local and world news. She loved puns and a good game of Scrabble.
While her husband was in active medical practice in Shipshewana, she was a member of the Indiana Medical Auxiliary Association for many years.
She committed her life to Christ as a young girl, and was baptized as an early elementary school age child. In her later years she was a member of College Mennonite Church in Goshen.
She is survived by four daughters, two sons, 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her brothers, George H. (Viola) Nussbaum and John W. Nussbaum.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at College Mennonite Church, 1900 S. Main St., Goshen, Saturday at 11 a.m.
