Veteran of World War 2
Virgil Gann, 80, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, February 14 at ManorCare Health Services of natural causes.
He was born August 22, 1925 in Burnesville, Mississippi, son of Jim and Leona Newcomb Gann. He married Mildred Dehl; they later divorced. He married Esther Stafford in November 1976 in Denver, Iowa. Mr. Gann served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 during World War 2.
Survived by his wife; two sons, Vurgil Gann Jr. of Rui Doso, New Mexico, and Randall Gann of Tallahassee, Florida; two stepsons, Tom (Deb) Roberts and Gary Schoonover, both of Waterloo; three daughters, Nancy (James) Dewater of Milton, Florida, Geri Sharp of Savannah, Georgia, and Pam Kuecker of Waterloo; three stepdaughters, Sandra Hagle of Newton, Carol (Mike) Peters of Waterloo, and Teresa Schoonover of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim (Betty) Gann of Evansdale; and one sister, Marjorie Tubbs of Coldwater, Mississippi.
Preceded in death by one son, Kent Earl; and one sister, Elaine Williams.
Services 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Faith Assembly of God, Elk Run Heights, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Military rites conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19. Visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Service, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
