Benjamin was a British Home Child brought to Canada by the Dr. Barndardo Homes.
Benjamin Butterworth was the son of Lewis Benjamin Butterworth & his wife Emma Elizabeth Crockett. His father died in 1883 and his mother in 1889. He was surrendered to Barnardo's and in spite of the fact his older brother (Charles circumstances had changed, he could now afford to care for his siblings) had requested his return to the family, Barnardo's sent Benjamin and his younger brother John Liddle Butterworth to Canada.
