Police Officer Donald Andrews, 35, was a 3-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 021 (Prairie) District.

On January 1, 1975, Officer Andrews and his partner Officer Daniel Howard, 26, were dispatched to an emergency call when they were involved in a vehicular collision with another squad car en route to the same location. The officers were on their way to the 47th Street Station in order to intercept a CTA train that had been boarded by a man with a gun. Although both squad cars had their sirens and lights on, they collided in the intersection of 43rd Street and Michigan Avenue. Officer Howard and Officer Andrews were transported to Michael Reese Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival. The officers in the second squad car suffered minor injuries. The suspect was arrested by other Chicago Police Officers.

Officer Andrews’ funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, and he was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He was survived by his daughter Cara Lee and his siblings Donna Lee, Mackey, Arnold, Edmond, and Michael. He was the son of Jesse and Frances Andrews.
