Mylan Abrahamson, 85, of Thief River Falls, formerly of Gatzke, MN, died Friday, March 05, 2010 at MeritCare Northwest Campus in Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, MN with Rev. Katie Koch officiating. Burial will follow in Moose River Cemetery, Rollis Township, Marshall County, MN.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 8, 2010 from 5-8 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Tuesday.
Mylan Arvid Abrahamson was born on April 6, 1924 to Martin Clarence and Gertrude Marie (Larson) Abrahamson on the family farm in Rollis Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school near Gatzke. His mother felt so strongly about education that Mylan needed to live in a boarding home in Middle River in order to graduate from High School in 1941, a year early and valedictorian of his class. He worked various jobs along with working on the family farm.
He served in the US Army during WW II, stationed in Japan. He was discharged in September of 1946. Mylan worked as a mail carrier in the Gatzke area from 1950 through 1980, he also continued farming during these years. Mylan was a complete straight shooter and had an admirable work ethic which he proudly passed onto his children. He had a great sense of humor and always had a joke to share.
He was united in marriage to Phyllis Beverly Gullikson on April 5, 1947 in Middle River, and to this union the Five Bs were born. They lived in Gatzke, MN until 1963 when they moved to the home farm near Gatzke. They moved to Thief River Falls in 1992. Phyllis passed away in 1995. Mylan has made his home at Oakland Park Communities since 2007.
Many people knew Mylan as Abe. Mylan enjoyed playing in numerous bands for over 50 years. He loved his grandchildren and followed their endeavors and activities closely. He developed close relationships and had a genuine concern and compassion for all people. He loved playing cards, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, bowling, camping, and was an avid Vikings fan. He was often referred to as the Middle River #1 Skipper Fan. He served on the United Lutheran church council and sang with the mens choir for many years. Mylan was active in many organizations and a member of the Eagles, and Oddfellows in Thief River Falls, Gatzke Sportsman Club, Rollis Township Board, Middle River Coop Association, Middle River School Board, Middle River Community Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion in Middle River, VFW in Thief River Falls and the Rural Letter Carriers Association.
He is survived by two sons: Bryce (Arlette), Holt, MN, Bradley (Charlene), Thief River Falls, MN, two daughters: Betsy (Ralph) McKeever, Middle River, MN, and Brenda (Tom) Fisher, Thief River Falls, MN, son in law Lowell Anderson, Dallas, TX, 13 grandchildren: Kristin (Tony) Hall, Lee (Brandy) Pemberton, Jennifer Anderson, Lynde (Todd) Brandon, Lucas Abrahamson, Beau (Sarah) Abrahamson, Thain Abrahamson, Korbi Fisher, Tessa McKeever, Meagan Abrahamson, Chaz Abrahamson, Hayley Fisher, TyLynn McKeever, 6 great grandchildren: Brady and Brooke Brandon, Jody and Jordan Pemberton, Jackson and Olivia Hall, and four sisters in law Arliss Abrahamson, New York Mills, MN, Joan Simmons, Roseau, MN , Dorothy (Roy) Bednarek, Oakdale MN, Judith (Edward) Johnson, Karlstad, MN and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis in 1995, a daughter Baryth Anderson in 1992, his parents, and one brother Glendon Abrahamson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association.
