JEANNIE BANNING
Jeannie (Hirst) Banning, 87, of 10 Branberry Drive, Westerly, passed away at the Mystic Manor on Wednesday March 31, 2004. She was the wife of the late Frederick L. Banning.
Jeannie was born in Westerly, the daughter of the late James and Mary Ellen (Scott) Hirst.
Mrs. Banning taught at the Ashaway School for 45 years before her retirement in 1982. She devoted her life to children and even continued to volunteer at the school for many years. She attended the Babcock Presbyterian Church in Ashaway and directed the choir for many years as well as serving as a Deacon. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Rhode Island Teachers Association.
In 1975, she was awarded the Woman of the Year by the Napatree Business and Professional Women's Club for her outstanding dedication to her profession and her remarkable success with children.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, of Westerly; one brother, of Ashaway; three sisters; three grandchildren, all of Westerly; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, William "Artie", James and Robert Hirst.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 3, at 10 a.m. in the Babcock Presbyterian Church, Maxson Street, Ashaway. Calling hours will be held on Friday evening from 4 to 7 in the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly.
