Valerie was born just outside of London, England, and lived there until she got married and moved to the United States in 1957. Her Mother, Elsie “Nan” moved from England, to be with the family in 1965 (and lived to be 99 when she passed away 2000). Valerie supported her husband throughout his Army career and he retired in 1967. She loved animals and worked at the Fairfax Animal Welfare League for 5 years. She spent over 21 years working for the Federal Government (Department of Agriculture) and retired as a Freedom of Information Officer. She was very active in the Altar and Flower Guilds at Pohick Church for over 30 years. She also started the Alexandria Branch of the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association (TBPA) in 1963. She and “Nan” moved to Fredericksburg in 1997 to be closer to Kendra and Luchen.
She is survived by her daughter Kendra Hockaday (Luchen), and their three furry children: Baby, Sprinkles and Princess (whom she considered her grand dogs). She is also survived by her cousin Pat Longman and several Sister and Brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dean Haugen (1996), and her mother Elsie Smith (2000) and her father, Horace Smith (1964).
