Lula, for her entire life, was called by her middle name "Bruce" (a family surname). She was the sister of Edward B Elder, Lottie I Elder, George F Elder, and Charles T Elder.
Lula Bruce married Edward Stokes Bishop on 4 Mar 1896 in Dinwiddie. They were the parents of: John Alfred Bishop, Lucy Thomas Bishop, Mary Gee Bishop, Gary Lee Bishop(born1904/died1905-twin of Mary), Roy Edward Bishop, Ashton Coles Bishop, George Cabell Bishop, Nellie Grey Bishop, Ruby Ray Bishop(born/died 1902), and Audrey Bruce Bishop.
When their eldest son, John, lost his wife in 1934 (to tuberculosis), Lula Bruce and Eddie took John's youngest two children to raise.
Tragedy struck again when, in January 1941, their son John lost his life (the result of an accident). Eddie died two months later (no doubt the strain of John's death contributed to this).
Lula Bruce died on 14 Jan 1953 in Dinwiddie (the 12th anniversay of her son's death, and the day before her husband's birthday).
Bruce left behind many loving children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to remember her sweet, kind, and loving manner, and to mourn her passing.
