He was a Cadet at V.M.I before joining Mosby's Rangers. His horse was shot from under him in a fight at Hamilton. He was captured and held at Fort McHenry. In 1866 he entered the University of Virginia and graduated in law but did not practice rather preferring to be a planter and politician postwar. He represented Sussex County in the Virginia House of Delagates before growing oranges and selling real estate in Florida. He and Margaret Page married in 1874. After the death of Margaret Page Harrison, Henry married Estelle DeVitt.
