June 18, 1918-July 11, 2008
"Berta," a gentle soul, passed from this earth in her sleep in the house where she touched so many lives.
A lifelong resident of Key West, Fla., Berta was of a breed of local women who would fill the air with the smell of local delicacies and whose kitchen was always open. Berta took pride in the fact that her family was always cared for and well fed. It was not unusual to arrive at "Abuela's" house and find any number of your friends there already eating.
Berta was preceded in death by her parents, Rogelio and Maria Ramirez; brothers Rogelio, Jose, Miguel, Frank, Hector, Albert and Tony Ramirez; sisters Elena Barrera and Delia Yates; and son-inlaw Richard Conrady.
Berta is survived by her husband of 70 years, Julio P. Lopez; daughters Cecilia (Waldo) Veliz and Olga Conrady; grandchildren Gregory (Teri) Veliz, Ramona (Brian) Moret, Cecilia (Norman) Gill, Stephen (Maria) Veliz and Timothy (Sheree) Veliz; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Abuela, the last few years have been a struggle. You sat as an idle spectator in the house, where you once ran the show. Rest now, Abuela, the struggle is over. You will be missed, but no one will ever forget how you cared for us.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers of Griswold Special Care and the caregivers and nurses from Hospice VNA.
Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, with Father John Baker officiating. Burial will be at the Key West City Cemetery in the family plot.
Services are entrusted to Castillo and Thurston's Key West Mortuary and Cremation Center.
