Austin J. Day returned to the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father on February 25, 2015 after a short but valiant battle against pancreatic cancer.
Austin was born on December 25, 1948 in Delta, Utah to Gilbert Eugene and Betty Jane Day. He was the first of four children.
Austin moved to Bedford during his senior year of high school where he was welcomed into the home of Ken and Leta Coffman. After graduating in 1967, Austin served in the Wyoming National Guard as a combat engineer. He received an honorable discharge to serve a mission for the LDS Church in Italy. He was blessed to serve not only in Italy but Switzerland and England as well.
When Austin returned to Bedford after his mission in April, 1970 he asked LaNece Wolfley to prom. It was love at first sight and they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 7, 1970. They settled in Rexburg where Austin attended Ricks College where he studied welding, carpentry and electronics. The skills he gained in the year he was in college served him well the rest of his life.
He spent the next few years working at ranches and dairy farms in Cokeville, Freedom and Bedford. He also worked for Maverik Country Stores and the co-gen plant in Afton. He earned his insurance license and sold insurance for a period of time. In the end, he returned to the work he loved: ranching and construction.
Austin loved to hunt, fish, camp and ride his horse in the wilderness with his friends. He was amazed at the beauty of God’s creations and looked forward to his next adventure. At the time of his death he was planning trips to the Redwoods and Germany, where his son is stationed with the US Army. Most importantly, he and LaNece were preparing to serve a mission. Two days after he was diagnosed with cancer they were blessed to be called to the North Carolina Raleigh Mission as Military Relations Specialists at Fort Bragg. Austin understood that he had received a greater calling and accepted this challenge with valor. This test only strengthened his testimony of Jesus Christ and his desire to serve his neighbors and friends. Austin had been involved with Boy Scouts for nearly 40 years and his last calling was as Wolf Den leader for 8 wonderful boys who brought a lot of happiness to his life.
Austin is survived by his wife of 45 years, LaNece, his daughter, DaNece of New York, and sons Justin (Allison Walsh-Day), Germany, and Ellis (Traci) of Gillette, his granddaughters Shelby and Kellyn Koenigs, and grandsons Colby, Jackson and Hunter Day, his brothers Warren (Jean) of Hurricane Utah and Pat (Tammy) of Pleasant Grove, Utah and sister, Beverly Chemin (Louis) of San Antonio, Texas. He cherished his relationships with LaNece’s sisters and brothers and their children. He also had special relationships with his “adopted” son, Scott Weber and his neighbors, Zach and Amy Kallgren and their children.
Austin had friends throughout Star Valley who brought great joy to his life. Anyone who was lucky enough to meet Austin had a loyal friend for life.
Austin did not want anyone to mourn his passing, but celebrate the life he lived. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Day home in Bedford. LaNece, DaNece, Justin and Ellis want to share Austin’s enthusiasm and love for life with all of Austin’s friends. Anyone who met Austin has a story about how Austin touched their life which we would like to record for Austin’s grandchildren. You can send the stories to 250 County Road 123 Bedford, WY 83112. In lieu of flowers we ask that you support the LDS Church Missionary Fund or the Thayne Senior Center (one of Austin’s favorite places), PO Box 1033, Thayne WY 83127.
