Mrs. Mary McElroy Dies on Birthday
Mrs. Mary M. McElroy, 1041 Park Avenue, daughter of a Civil War brigadier general, died Saturday in a local hospital on her ninety-eighth birthday.
She was the widow of William A. O’Brien [sic], formerly a traffic chief of the Western Union Telegraph Company.
Mrs. McElroy, born in Whitewater, Wis., came here in 1866 with her parents, Gen. and Mrs. George Morgan O’Brien. She attended the first Mount St. Mary’s Convent here while her father was in command at Fort McPherson, Neb. He left the Army in 1866, practiced law in Omaha, and died in 1888.
The McElroys were married in 1871 by the first Catholic Bishop of Omaha, Bishop O’Gorman. Mr. McElroy died in 1914. Of their five children, three survive: Miss Agnes McElroy, Omaha; Mrs. Bernard, Denver, Colo., and William A., Jr., Hamilton, Mont.
Mrs. McElroy was a charter member of St. Peter’s Church.
