Josiah was the son of James Ware III and Elizabeth Taliaferro Alexander. He married first Frances Toy Glassell on February 22, 1827 in Virginia. They had six children. After her death in 1842, he married second Edmonia Jaquelin Smith on July 30, 1845 in Virginia. They also had six children. Josiah had constructed Springfield on land he inherited. He ran it as a stock farm. He raised thoroughbred horses and purebred cattle and sheep. The Civil War made him unable to keep his fine plantation. While he was there, Congressmen and Presidents were entertained. His cousin Lucy married Rutherford Hayes.
