Mr. Drake excelled in athletics at Fayetteville High. He was an all-state selection in football and a member of the 1948 state championship basketball team.
He was an Army veteran, serving with the 142 nd Field Artillery during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Southwestern Bell Communications after 40 years of service and was a longtime member of Ridgeview Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Doris Drake; a son, Terry Drake and his wife, Kimberly; a daughter, Angela Calloway and her husband, Paul; a brother, Bob Drake; and three sisters, Daphina Mitchell, Vaughdeen Clark and Roberta Gandy. He is also survived by five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
