The son and fifth-born child of Confederate veteran Joseph R. Glisson and Mary ("Pollie") Ann Strickland Glisson, Roan (Rowan) A. Glisson was born in January of 1857 in Bulloch County, Georgia. He had eleven siblings. On January 21, 1878 he married Ardelia Driggers Glisson, and they had seven children: William H. Glisson, Eva E. Glisson, Addie Glisson, Roy Wood Glisson, Brantley Slater Glisson, Sidney Glisson, and Arthur Frankling Glisson. Roan was a farmer. His ancestry was Scots, English, German, and--through the Martin and Strickland surnames--Native American (Lumbee).

Roan died at age 68 on April 5, 1925 in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia of chronic endocarditis and pneumonia. His wife preceeded him in death. The two are buried in Lower Black Creek Cemetery in Bryan County, Georgia.
