Mrs. Nancy Simons of Wilkes County, the Gentile widow of a wealthy Jew, Captain Abraham Simons married Reverend Jesse Mercer, founder of Mercer University, Macon, Georgia in Dec. 11, 1827.

She was the daughter of John Mills and Inez Lucy Carter Mills.

Mrs. Nancy Mercer, consort of the Rev. Jesse Mercer, aged about 70 years. Her sufferings were long and severe, from palsy, which she bore with Christian meekness and resignation, giving in her latter and, consolatory evidences to her present and many absent friends, that she was dying the death of the righteous. She has been for many years a member of the Baptist church. Weep Christian, for thy sister is gone; mourn, friend, for the hand of humanity is still forever.
