Hilda Ukens, youngest daughter of German immigrants Uke and Martha Ukens of Hudson Kansas, was born on November 7,1905. She had 2 sisters and 3 brothers. She married Frank Walter Grett on May 21, 1928 at the Trinity Parsonage in Hudson, Kansas. They spent their honeymoon at the home of relatives in Brandon Colorado before settling down in Newton Kansas.
She was a terrific cook and her desserts were out of this world. She loved to play cards, and when Frank would get the best of her (which was quite often) she would start spouting German, words she refused to translate! She never had a bad thing to say about anyone, just a joy to be around.
They had 3 daughters: Nadine Martha Hawkins 1930-1968, Janet Maxine Woods 1937-2014, and Nila June Rogers 1940-1995. and 7 grandchildren: Timothy Hawkins, Jana Hawkins Comyford, Leonard Woods, Bryan Rogers, Tamara Rogers Johns, William Todd Rogers, and Joyce Woods Pallas. She died on April 23, 1993 after suffering a stroke.
