Ben Hudnall Funeral Today At Pittsburg

PITTSBURG, Aug. 2. Funeral services for Ben Hudnall, 72, a native of Smith County and pioneer East Texas rose grower, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ellis Funeral Home here. Rev. Charles Lamb, pastor of the Pittsburg Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Pittsburg. Pallbearers will be Ralph Smith, Harold Hess, Oscar Hughes, Doyle Hudnall, Billy Hudnall and Sid Duncan.

Hudnall, who had been a Pittsburg resident 36 years, died suddenly at his home here late Monday afternoon. He was born on a farm near Pine Springs, a son of Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Hudnall.

He entered the nursery business as a young man after an apprenticeship of a few years each with the McKee Nurseries at Mount Selman and With Joseph W. Vestal and Son, prominent rose growers of Little Rock. He began growing roses as a specialty, and is credited with being the first to discover and introduce the present two year budded system of roses on understock in Smith County.

Hudnall moved to Pittsburg in 1912 where he continued growing roses until his retirement a few years ago. His wife preceded him in death.

Surviving are three sons, Vestal and Cone Hudnall of Pittsburg and Newton Hudnall of Clovis, N. M. ; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert Smith of Pittsburg and Miss Maurine Hudnall of New Boston; four brothers, Horace of Pittsburg, Will, Tom and Robert Hudnall of Tyler; two sisters, Mrs. J. H. McKinney of Arlington, Va., and Mrs. Margaret Crossman of Tyler.
