Enlisted, June 20, 1916, in Troop C, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, Brooklyn, NY. Served with Troop C, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, on the Mexican border, June 1919 - March 1917.The 1st NY Cavalry Regiment reorganized for the World War as the 104th & 106th Machine Gun Battalions, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company C, 104th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. Transferred Nov. 13, 1917 to the 817th Depot Aero Squadron, then to A.S. Flying School Detachment, Arcadia, FL. Discharged from the service, June 17, 1919

Served with his brother Francis, with the 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, on the Mexican border, but a different Troop. His brother in law, James Gardiner Conroy, also served in the 1st NY Cavalry ( he was killed in action, in World War 2, as the commander of the 165th Infantry Regiment, Makin Island ).
