Danny was the son of Zetic Ward and Esta R. Ward of Beauty Kentucky, and on April 12, 1965 he enlisted in the US Army. Danny arrived in Vietnam on September 23, where he was assigned to and served with B Company, 1st Battalion, 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade USARV.

During Operation HUMP,on November 8, Company B made contact with enemy forces in the vicinity of Hill 65, 21 kilometers north, and northeast of the Bien Hoa Airfield. During the engagement enemy mortar fire hit the troops and PFC Danny Ward was killed by metal fragment for the hostile fire.
