Born in 1849 in Staffordshire, England to Irish parents, James was a coal miner as a child. He immigrated to the United States in 1874 and became a naturalized citizen in 1890. He met Ellen Hynes in Youngstown where she had fled after her first husband, Michael Donnelly, had been murdered in Canada. They married in 1883 and had six children together. He was a musician, machinist and inventor. He briefly moved to San Francisco but returned to Cleveland after his workshop was destroyed in the great 1906 earthquake. Although his birth year is given as 1851 to 1853 on different documents after he arrived in the United States, his baptism record indicates he was born in 1849.
