Shirley Terrell Leavell September 1, 1917 - March 4, 2013 Shirley Terrell Leavell, 95, died on March 4th, 2013 of natural causes in El Paso, Texas. She was born in El Paso on September 1, 1917 to Dr. Scurry Terrell and his wife, Homer (nee Callier) Terrell. She was educated in California, Switzerland, and was a graduate of Pine Manor College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She married Charles Holland Leavell of El Paso on March 15, 1938. Mrs. Leavell was proceeded in death by her devoted husband, Charles, her sister, Margaret, and her brother Frank. Mrs. Leavell had an impressive record of community service in El Paso that included serving as President of the Junior League in 1949. She also served on the Boards of Family Services of El Paso, the Boys Club, The El Paso Rehab Center, The El Paso Museum Guild, the Pan American Round Table, and Goodwill Industries of El Paso. Mrs. Leavell and her good friend Sarah Lea were the first two women to serve on the United Way Board of Directors and were affectionately referred to at the time as the "Gold Dust Twins" for their tireless efforts in fundraising for local charities. Mrs. Leavell was honored by her community with the Yucca Award from the Junior League of El Paso, the First Lady of El Paso Award by Beta Sigma Phi, and the Humanitarian Award by the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Serving on the Board of the YWCA of El Paso for many years, she was on the Finance, Membership, Planning, Building, and Executive Committees and was instrumental in the continued growth and success of this organization. To honor her service, the Shirley Leavell Branch of the YWCA was dedicated in 1981. She and her husband Charles traveled extensively throughout the world visiting such exotic places as New Guinea, Antarctica, Kashmir, India, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. However, perhaps their most loved and memorable times were trips taken with family on African Safaris, horse-packing with their friends, Tom and Sarah Lea, into the mountains of Wyoming, or fly fishing with family and guests at their historical ranch, The 4UR in Creede, Colorado. Mrs. Leavell is survived by her daughter, Mary Lee Pinkerton of El Paso, her son, Charles (Pete) Leavell and his wife, Lindsey, of Denver, Colorado, her grand children Matthew Winston and his wife, Mary, of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, Fred Winston and his wife, Shelly, of Montrose Colorado, Jennifer Leavell and her husband Jay Smith of Denver Colorado, Brian Leavell of Los Angeles California, and her great grandchildren John Terrell Winston, and Audrey and Walker Smith. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends and by the community that she served so well. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the YWCA of El Paso at 201 E.
