Reverend Andrew J. Vollkommer, 60, of Chapin died Wednesday, January 27, 2016. Vigil and Wake will be on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, February 2 at 11:00 am. Both liturgies will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 195 Amicks Ferry Road in Chapin.

Born in Oceanside, New York on June 26, 1955, he was the son of the late Joseph and Florence Vollkommer.

He attended public schools on Long Island, New York and attended Holy Name of Mary Parish in Valley Stream, New York. He graduated from Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina in 1977 with a B.A. degree in Sociology with a minor in Theology. After serving as Director of Religious Education in the Southern Diocese of Pueblo, Colorado for one year, he entered the Order of Saint Benedict as a monk in 1978 and professed first vows as a Benedictine monk in 1979.

He taught Sociology at Belmont Abby College for one year and then served as Director of Religious Education at Queen of the Apostles Parish in Belmont, North Carolina from 1980 to 1982. In 1982, he professed Solemn Final Vows as a Benedictine monk at Belmont Abbey. He then began theological studies for the priesthood at Saint John’s Abbey and School of Theology in Collegeville, Minnesota.
During his theological studies, Father Andrew spent 6 months studying Biblical Studies and Archeology in Ain Karim, Jerusalem, and traveled throughout the Holy Land with the rest of his Seminary Class. At the end of his theological studies, he earned the degrees of Master of Arts in Religious Education with Distinction and a Master of Divinity with Honors from Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He was ordained a transitional deacon on March 30, 1985, and served as a Deacon at Saint Michael’s Parish for 8 months while continuing his theological formation. At the end of his Seminary studies, he was ordained a Catholic Priest on the 28th of June, 1986, at Belmont Abbey Monastery and celebrated his Priest Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 29, 1986 at Saint Michael’s Parish in Gastonia, North Carolina. He was then assigned as Assistant Pastor there for one year.

Father Andrew pursued the Degree of Master of Arts in Liturgical Studies at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in 1987-1988 and upon completion of his advanced theological studies, returned to Gastonia, North Carolina, where he served at Saint Michael’s Parish from 1988 to 1993. He also served as a member of the Presbyteral Council in the Diocese of Charlotte, on the Liturgical Commission of the Diocese and in various other positions at the Monastery and in the Diocese. He also assisted as a case worker in the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal.

In 1993, feeling that he was called more to a life as a Parish Priest, Father Andrew petitioned the Holy See and was accepted by Bishop David B. Thompson as Diocesan Priest and was assigned to Saint Joseph’s in Columbia, South Carolina, and then to Our Lady of the Lake where he served continuously until his death.

He celebrated the 25th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Roman Catholic Priesthood on May 29, 2013 at a Solemn High Mass at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.

Following the celebration of his Jubilee, Father Andrew participated in a program of spiritual renewal and sabbatical for priests in the Holy Land on the Gospel of Mark and Biblical Archeology and then in Mexico City studying in an Intermediate Spanish program specifically for Parish Priests which was useful to the Parish in expanding its outreach to the growing Latino Community of the area.
Father Andrew loved being a priest and serving the church. He enjoyed traveling, good food, his cars, and embraced many different cultures.

He is survived by sisters, Carol Morris (Alex) of Sarasota, FL and Mary Cutler (Bill) of Jacksonville, FL; many nieces and nephews, including those whom he grew up with, Christine, Jayni, and Jack; and his beloved cats, Sophie, Ralphie, and Bruno.

The family suggest memorials be made to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church Building Fund, 195 Amicks Ferry Rd., Chapin, SC 29036.
