Cody Shane Sanders, age 19, of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at Children's Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., after his lifelong battle with Pompes Disease, a form of muscular dystrophy. Cody was the first Pompes patient in Missouri to receive trial enzyme replacement therapy, which has recently been proven successful.
Cody was born May 1, 1987, in Joplin, son of Rodney Lee Sanders and Jane Ann Narramore Sanders, of Joplin.
Cody was a lifelong resident of the Joplin and Neosho areas. He was a 2005 graduate of Joplin High School and worked as a payroll clerk for the Independent Living Center. He was a strong Christian and a member of Church of God, Seventh Day. He was a Joplin area M.D.A. goodwill ambassador and regularly participated in the local Jerry Lewis Labor Day and Children's Miracle Network Telethons. He also participated in Challenger League baseball. He attended and thoroughly enjoyed M.D.A. camps at Lake of the Ozarks. He was a founding member of H.F.M. (Heroes from Missouri), a video game team. He was known online as "Superman" and was an avid Superman fan. A very talented artist, he enjoyed playing electric guitar and playing pool. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. A typical teenager, he also loved girls and sports cars. He was a former member of the Neosho Boy Scout Troop and was named an honorary Neosho fireman. He was also an honorary black belt in karate.
In addition to his parents, Cody is survived by two sisters, Sheba Cook, husband, Randal, and their son, Kaden, of Stark City, Mo., and Nikki Mayfield and husband, Kevin, of Neosho; paternal grandparents, Herman "Doc" Sanders and wife, Lucille, of Joplin, and Phyllis Sanders, of Webb City, Mo.; maternal uncle, Lynn Narramore and wife, Cathy; paternal uncle, Randy Sanders and wife, Marcia; paternal aunts, Rhonda Snyder and husband, Wayne, and Ragena Snyder and husband, Duane; many cousins; many close friends including his longest and best friend, Marine Drew Dishman, currently serving in Iraq; and his Heroes from Missouri brothers.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Pat and Clyde Narramore; and maternal uncle, Bill Narramore.
Cody's warm smiles, cheerful attitude and kind heartedness have touched many lives and he will be greatly missed by many.
A celebration of Superman's life was held Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Vernon Peterson officiating. Interment will follow at Park Cemetery in Carthage, Mo., with local area firefighters serving as pallbearers.
