Funeral services for Marion Madison "Bill" Goldsmith, 82, of Needville, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at the Needville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tom Bain officiating. Interment will follow in the Brown-Beard Family Cemetery in Needville. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 at Garmany & Carden Funeral Home, 1201 Fourth Street in Rosenberg.

Mr. Goldsmith died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Triumph Hospital Southwest in Sugar Land. He was born Feb. 10, 1922 in Sunset, Texas.

He graduated in 1940 from Richmond High School. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. He enlisted Dec. 8, 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor. He pulled gliders, jumped paratroopers, and hauled Airborne Infantry in the United States. He was a T/Sgt. Aerial Engineer attached to the 10th and 14th Air Force in India and China (C.B.I. Theater - flew "The Hump").

He was awarded a Distinguished Unit Badge Go 10 WD in 1944, an Air Medal with one bronze star Go. 156 Hq AAF CB 1 on Sept. 11, 1944, a Good Conduct Medal Go 33 WD 45, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal 2 bronze stars, and American Theatre Campaign Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge Sept. 11, 1945.

He worked for Phillips Petroleum in Sweeny for 36 years. He was a rancher for 56 years and a member of Texas Southwestern Cattlemen's Association. He also was a member of the Needville United Methodist Church for 56 years. He served on the Needville ISD board of trustees for 12 years. He was a member of the Rosenberg Chapter No. 429 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

On Oct. 18, 1952, he joined the Arabia Shrine Temple. He was a charter member of the Fort Bend Shrine Club since 1968 and served as president in 1995. From 2001-2003 he was a member of the Shrine Center Board of Trustees. He was the Arabia Campers president in 2004.

He was raised to the level of Master Mason in the Masonic Morton Lodge No. 72 on Dec. 27, 1949 and also held office. He was Worshipful Master 1972-1973. On Jan. 31, 2004, he was the recipient of the Morton Lodge No. 72's Golden Trowel Award.

Other organizations he belonged to include Scottish Rite, Valley of Houston; York Rite in which he served as Most Excellent High Priest - Richmond Chapter No. 467; and was on the Audit and Community Builder Committee.

In 1998, he received the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas Cornerstone Award. He was a member of Park Place Commandry No. 106 K.T.; Scottish Rite Houston; and Fort Bend Scottish Rite Club in Richmond. He also was Super Excellent Master - Order of Silver Trowel - Order of High Priesthood.

He enjoyed camping, raising animals and visiting historical sites.

This loving, dedicated husband, father and grandfather will be remembered and missed by family, friends, and colleagues.

His parents, William Grady Goldsmith and Bonnie Frances Beck Goldsmith, preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, Duff Marshal Goldsmith.

He is survived by Jo Evelyn Goldsmith, his wife of 56 years; four daughters, Sherry Roehling and husband, Charles, Donna Schneider, Marian Miksch and husband, Randy, and Carla Bowles and husband, Jim; grandchildren: Chad and Carrie Roehling, Christopher Roehling, Brian and Christina Meuth, Brandon Schneider, Bradley Miksch and Rachael Greenberg, Brett Miksch, Justin Bowles, and Jeffrey Bowles; and great grandson, Bryce Meuth.
