Appalachian born in 1908 in Robbins, TN to Ellen Bryant Raines and Thomas Raines. He was close to all of his siblings; two sisters, Rosetta and Hesta and three brothers, Robert, Fred and Harry. He lived most of his adult life in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife Violet. He was a barber by trade. He was also active in his community in many ways including a continuing interest in Cincinnati's wonderful Zoological Park.
