From a 1907 Nance County, Nebraska, newspaper clipping file, transcribed by Linda Berney:

The funeral of Mrs. Mary Ellen Steele occurred last Monday at 4 p.m. from St. Michael's church, conducted by Father Galvin. Mrs. Steele was a daughter of Gen. John O'Neill and was born at Washington, D.C., and died April 27, 1907 at the residence of August Fritz.

Having lived in Spalding since the town was in its infancy and being of the character and disposition that wins friends and retains them, her death has caused grief and sorrow in every home of her acquaintance. The Highlander lodge of which the deceased was a member, assisted nobly in the procession bearing the remains to their last resting place.

J. H. O'Neill, a brother of the deceased from San Diego, Calif., her son Donold, Mr. Burnell and Miss Grace Coughlin, a brother-in-law and sister of Omaha were in attendance at the funeral with two sisters and little son who were unable to be here have the deepest sympathy of the people of this place. - Spalding Sentinel.

From the Fullerton Post, May 2, 1907, page 5, transcribed by Linda Berney:

Mrs. Mary Steele died last week at the home of August Fritz at Spalding, where she had been living for some time. Mrs. Steele was well known and had many friends here, having conducted a dressmaking establishment a number of years ago when she was Miss Mamie O'Neill. She was ill only a few days and her friends did not realize that she was in a serious condition until a few hours before her death.

She was the widow of Lincoln Steele, an attorney at David City and the daughter of Gen. John O'Neill, who was famous for his efforts in behalf of the Irish people.

Two little sons, three sisters and a brother, John O'Neill of San Diego, are left to mourn her loss.

From the Fullerton News-Journal, May 2, 1907, page 5, transcribed by Linda Berney:

Mrs. Mamie O'Neill-Steele, of Spalding, formerly of Fullerton, died last Thursday after an illness of ten days of abcess of the bowels. The funeral was not held until Monday, awaiting the arrival of her brother John, who lives in California.

She leaves two sons, besides her other relatives to mourn her loss. All preparations had been made for her second marriage when the dread summons came, and she was buried in what were to be her wedding garments.

A strange request she made was that one of the boys be brought to see her before she died, and the other to see her only after her eyes were closed in death.

She was the eldest daughter of Col. O'Neill who led the Fenians in their raid into Canada a number of years ago.
