Life Legacy

Glen Paul "Joe" Dougherty, 82, of Ottawa passed away Sunday, May 15, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am Saturday, May 21, 2016 at St. Francis of Assisi Church with Father Tony Fevlo officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday, May 20, 2016 at Ottawa Funeral Home. Prayers will be at 3:45 with the Knights of Columbus in attendance. He will be buried in St. Columba Cemetery with military services.

Joe was born July 9, 1933 in Ottawa, Illinois to Edmund and Katherine (Halm) Dougherty. He was a 1952 graduate of Marquette High School where he enjoyed playing sports. He still owns the school record for the longest run from scrimmage which is 95 yards in the Chebanse Game and was elected to the John Pociavasek Hall of Fame. He married Judy Veith on February 16, 1957 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Ottawa. He was a lifelong member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and a member of St. Francis Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and was Grand Knight for two terms. He served on the LaSalle County Board from 1999 to 2006 and was chairman for the last 4 years. He always said he enjoyed serving on the board and doing good things for the people in the county.

Following graduation he joined the United States Air Force. During his four years of service he was a Ground Control Operator and spent thirteen months in Korea. Upon discharge from the Air Force he entered the plumbers apprentice program for Local 81. He taught the apprentice program and served as financial secretary for nine years for Local 81. He was proud to be a 60 year member of the union. He worked as a foreman for many local projects. He was also the City of Ottawa plumbing inspector for a couple of years.

Mr. Dougherty was a past member of the Marquette High School Board and was the president for five years. He volunteered many hours of labor and expertise at Marquette High School. He always put his family first and enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's events. He enjoyed playing golf, cheering on the Cubs, Notre Dame, and the Bears. He was know as the expert chef at the family picnics, was known as the expert popcorn maker, and enjoyed playing cards. Everyone in his family loved to sit around and listen to stories he told from his childhood. He definitely enjoyed lifting one with his buddies from the K of C.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; eight children, Karen Marshall of Peoria, Joseph (Tammy) Dougherty of Ottawa, Karla (Brian) O'Connor of AL., Terese (Robert) Williams of Ottawa, Caroline (Christopher) Hanes of Lombard, Jackie (Larry) Majerus of Ottawa, Edmund (Molly) Dougherty of Naplate, and Jan (Matthew) Krug of Ottawa; twenty-one grandchildren, Katie (Dirk) Marshall-Madison, Ted Marshall, Claire (Kyle) Marshall-Allen, Amanda (Tim) Dougherty-Rasmussen, Eryn, Neil, and Megan Dougherty, Ryan and Mallory O'Connor, Mary C. (Eric) O'Connor-Brock, Kirsten and Kelsey Williams, Patrick, Melanie, and Camille Hanes, Ethan and Chandler Majerus, Liam and Maddie Dougherty, and Laura and Layne Krug; four great-grandchildren, Drake and Claire Madison, Adele Bailey, and Jamison Rasmussen; four siblings, Emmett Dougherty of Ottawa, Mary Ann Holm of Washburn, Rita (Brad) Petersen of Spokane, WA, and William (Lori) Dougherty of Lisle.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jean Leonard; two brothers-in-law, John Leonard and Harold Halm.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
