Jesse Garfield Thompson was born Dec 20, 1884 or 1885, family says 1884 and 1900 census & other documents states 1885. Jesse was the 5th child of Hiram Thompson and Penina "Jane" Hall. Siblings were Mary Isabelle Thompson, Walter S Thompson, Hiram Watson Thompson and Ella Jane Thompson.

Jesse married Dec 19, 1906 in Graham, Tazewell Co, Virginia to Letha Mae Belcher d/o John Madison Belcher, Sr and Harriet Julian "Julia Ann" Compton.

Jesse & Letha had 6 children. Clarence, Blanche, Carl, Homer, Hilda and Jesse, Jr. Eleven days before their last child was born Jesse was shot on Sept 6, 1922 at 9:30am by a pinkerton out of Chicago who had come to Mercer/McDowell Counties to stop unionizing of the coal mines. Jesse was an honorable man who owned the taxi stand in Montcalm, worked in a coal mine for Louisville Coal & Coke Co in Goodwill, WVa and was possibly part owner of a coal mine, and possibly part owner of an auto dealership. He was a 32nd degree Mason. If Jesse couldn't save 10 cents on the dollar earned, he didn't think it was worth the effort. At the time of his death Jesse was running for the office of sheriff against H B Hildebrand. Hildebrand was the person who shot Jesse in the back. Letters and notes from neighbors and town people validate he was an honorable and generous man they believe would have won the sheriff election.

Jesse was buried 1st in Tabernacle Cemetery on Tabernacle Hill, Montcalm, Mercer Co, WVa, but in the 1970s his remains were transferred to Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, Mercer Co, WVa to lay beside his wife, Letha.

With the families permission, Jesse's 1st grave site on Tabernacle Hill was used for a pauper who died from an auto accident in 1970s.
